The Mediterranean diet is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is seasonal, plant-forward and shared at the table.

MED4CITRUS starts from the Hippocratic principle that everyday food can protect health. Citrus fits that idea well: it is grown across the region, eaten year-round and rich in bioactive compounds.

Yet adherence to the Mediterranean diet has dropped sharply among young people, including in the countries where it was born.

Key points

  • The diet is a pattern of eating, not a single food
  • Citrus is one practical, affordable entry point
  • Culture and heritage matter as much as nutrients
